Disney World Marathon
January 9, 2006
Yesterday I competed in the Disney World Marathon in Orlando Florida. I finished second in the Mens wheelchair division and was 13th overall in a time of 2:43.36.
There were over 17, 000 people that started on a very cold morning. My coach told me after the race that an organizer told him that this was a record low temperature for the event.
I started out ok and the coarse was very entertaining as you got to run through all the theme parks at Disney World, each was filled with cheering spectators! But around mile 14 my legs started to get really tired and my pace really suffered.
My split times were: 10 miles = 57:51, Half (13.1 miles) = 1:16.28, 20 miles = 2:00.51, Finish = 2:43.36..... so I was on pace for a 2:30-2:35 pace through half the race but then it just fell apart as a few late climbs and twists and turns in the course really became difficult.
It was still a good effort but I think my training leading up to the race suffered due to snow in early December and the holiday season. Oh well live and learn.
